• The “Miłomłyn” cruise is a journey to the place where the construction of the canal began in 1844. Today, it is the upper basin of the Miłomłyn lock, from which three waterways branch off: towards Ostróda, towards Lake Jeziorak and Iława, and towards Elbląg.

The Żegluga marina offers a stop in the “port of three canals”, where the counting of canal mileage begins in three separate directions! The passenger can stand by the stone with the number km 0.00.

  • The lake trail from the Ostróda side leads through the main, urban branch of Lake Drwęckie and through the western branch, leading towards the outflow of the Drwęca river near Samborowo. In the meantime, we sail under the steel bridge of a disused railway line (dating back to the end of the 19th century), next to the former marina and the “Czarny Róg” forester’s lodge.
  • The canal trail leads mainly through the canalized bed of the Liwa River, flowing out of the lake near the Miłomłyn old town. We mostly enjoy forest or mid-field (from the Miłomłyn side) landscapes.
  • In both cases, from the deck of the ship we also admire the panoramas of Miłomłyn and Ostróda visible from afar.
  • During the journey, we sail under 3 road bridges and learn how a chamber lock works. Two nearby structures (the Zielona and Miłomłyn locks) allow us to overcome a total water level difference of nearly 4.5 m, as the water surface of Lake Drwęckie is that much lower compared to the main trail of the Elbląg Canal.
  • Fun fact: part of the cruise overlaps with the trail sailed in the second half of the 1950s during a kayak trip by Karol Wojtyła, elected Pope John Paul II 20 years later. To commemorate the “Papal Trail”, a granite monument was erected and an oak tree was planted at the Miłomłyn lock.
