This cruise is for those who want to follow the dreams of the builders of the Elbląg Canal – to be able to sail from the inland to the sea. These salty waters were the Vistula Lagoon, which connects to the open Baltic Sea.
We set off from the waterfront at the Elbląg Old Town, opposite Granary Island, and sail down the Elbląg River. Just a few moments after casting off from the marina pier, we experience unique moments – passing through two Elbląg drawbridges: the so-called High Bridge and Low Bridge. Despite the name of one of them, both are “low” enough that it is necessary to raise the span with the roadway and sidewalks.
From the ship’s deck, we will see the former industrial buildings of Elbląg along the river banks, including the former shipyard halls and docks, port quays, and yacht marinas – proving the maritime traditions of the inhabitants of Elbląg.
On the port side, we will pass the fork of the trail, which is the beginning of the Jagiellonian Canal (from 1495), which can be taken to reach the Nogat river and Malbork. We continue north, sailing down the newly canalized Elbląg River, with new quays and mooring places – part of the investment related to the construction of the Vistula Spit canal.
At the end of the route, we will sail under a modern swing bridge in Nowakowo, built on the site of a former pontoon crossing. This swing bridge is high enough for us that we sail under it without the need for “swinging”.
The halfway point of the cruise is the turning of the ship in the town of Ujście, near the mouth of the Elbląg River. Almost within arm’s reach and in our line of sight are the waters of the Vistula Lagoon.
Fun fact: In order to sail to this place, the construction of a navigable route, then called the Elbląg-Oberland Canal, began in Miłomłyn in 1844. This is a cruise for those who want to immerse themselves in history and the landscapes of Żuławy.
