Why the Viking Route?

We set off from the waterfront at the Elbląg Old Town. On the starboard side of the ship, we will pass Granary Island, and on the port side, the original, 19th-century ship from the Elbląg-Oberland Canal “Jantar” (formerly the cargo barge “Martha”), moored at the Elbląg Museum.
The goal of the cruise is to reach Lake Druzno – a strict nature reserve of European rank, included in the Natura 2000 network and protecting over 200 species of waterfowl.
At the south-eastern end of this lake (towards the former Oberland) is the beginning (or if you prefer – the end) of the Elbląg Canal.
According to the account of the Anglo-Saxon sailor Wulfstan from around 890, the lake valley was once a bay of marine lagoon waters, and on one of the sea shores there was a Viking trade and port settlement called Truso. Today we know that it was the area on the north-eastern shore of Lake Druzno – near the town of Janów.
From the ship’s deck, we can admire the Old Town panorama, including the revitalized Granary Island, former port and industrial buildings, Elbląg bridges, and finally the Żuławy landscapes. In the first phase of the cruise (already on the waters of Lake Druzno), the site of former Truso should be looked for on the port side… On the starboard side, we will see the village of Węgle-Żukowo and the building of the former “Three Roses” inn with an old marina – a destination for pre-war Elbląg residents’ trips. Ultimately, the ship turns back in the middle of the lake.
Fun fact: Initially, we sail up the Elbląg River, which is partly (up to the railway bridge and the mouth of the Fiszewka River) considered internal marine waters, and partly (up to the outflow from Lake Druzno) inland waters. So it is a sea-inland-sea cruise!
